They see and hear in the “mind’s eye and ear” that which is hidden from the sight and hearing of ordinary people. Their imagination takes the shape of an extraordinary revelation (a Western notion) or a profound insight (an Eastern notion). So powerful is this mode of imaginative thinking that the thinker’s mind soars in time and apace, moves beyond reason, visualizes and generates ideas, alters the course of events, and creates or invents another order of existence or reality beyond this life.

Creative religious individuals are possessed and haunted by fixed and besetting images that are ascribed either to an internal source known as insight, awareness, or consciousness (an Eastern notion) or to an external source known as revelation (a Western notion).

The pages of Human history are filled with accounts of "religious" people who have committed "immoral" acts in the name of religion.

But if defining religion very narrowly is a mistake, an equally dangerous practice is to define it so broadly that the term loses all significance. To say, for instance, that religion is awe or wonder or love is to say nothing at all, because a flash of lighting or a flight of birds can inspire awe or wonder and because love is as often equated with self-indulgence or self-gratification as it is with self-sacrifice. At the beginning of the modern era, several attempts were made to define religion in terms of its origin or its (supposedly) universal characteristics.
